The Lusatian Mountains, the landscape on both sides of the Upper Spree and the Lusatian Neisse, extends from the Wroclaw-Magdeburg glacial valley in the north to the Lusatian Mountains in the southeast and (Upper) Lusatian Mountains in the south.

Here in Upper Lusatia, the landscape reaches an altitude of over 500 m in the summit areas. The Valtenberg is the highest mountain at 586 m above sea level. It is interesting to note that there is an observation tower or / and mountain inn on almost every notable mountain peak in Upper Lusatia. Most of these structures were built between 1850 and 1900. They are testimonies of the homeland attachment and the economic upswing at that time.

Sap green forests and meadows, rolling hills, widely spaced hilltops, elongated ridges, broad valleys, unique water landscapes and rugged granite and sandstone cliffs dot the landscape.

The largest cities in Upper Lusatia are Zittau, Görlitz and Bautzen. Discover there sacral treasures and imposing buildings that invite you to marvel. Relax in flower-filled parks and gardens or walk in the footsteps of an eventful past.

In the historic towns, centuries-old traditions and customs are still lovingly cultivated today; entire villages are listed as historic monuments. Take Obercunnersdorf, for example: there are 260 half-timbered houses here. The half-timbered house is a special folk building style in Upper Lusatia, which can be recognized by its wooden arches. The examples in Obercunnersdorf are particularly enchanting with their profiled pillars, plain log rooms, door walls made of Lusatian granite, their windows with wrought-iron grilles and colorful showcase gardens. This impressive folk architecture also runs through the rest of the Upper Lusatian Mountains.

Explore the region actively by bike or on a challenging hike. From the Six Towns Alliance and Via Sacra, to Sorbian culture, Pückler’s garden dreams, the Upper Lusatian half-timbered house architecture and Lusatian fish, to unique recreational facilities, challenging sporting events, and excellently developed cycling and hiking trails – hardly any other vacation region is as diverse and surprising as Upper Lusatia!
